CHAPTER 15

"Ididn't think I'd be able to pay attention, but that was fascinating," I said to Presley and Tillie as we walked out of the session we had just attended called Storytelling: The Best Way to Attract Customers.

"I know. I merchandise the product at Silk according to season and trend, but I never thought of taking it one step further and creating a story that would evoke feeling like here, wear this beautiful fall outfit and think of pumpkin spice lattes and walks in the brisk cool weather," Presley said with a dramatic flair. I started laughing.

"Me neither. We tend to have seasonal-type things as well. Christmas books for Christmas, scary books at Halloween, love stories at Valentine's Day, but we don't take that next step," I said. "What about you, Tillie? How do you think you could include storytelling into your pet bakery?"

“I don't know. I agree the session was interesting. The speaker was engaging but I can't help but walk out of every presentation feeling like a complete failure, and like I'm in over my head. I mean, I thought I'd put up a few flyers and maybe a Facebook page and that would be enough. I’ve been so naïve," she moaned.

Presley shook her head. "If only it were that easy. I will tell you the hardest part about running my business is thinking of new ways to get people in the door, and I suspect that's true for every business."

I nodded my agreement and then thoughtfully looked at Presley as she started speaking again.

"You know how people are obsessed with their pets these days and most pet owners, especially dog owners, feel their pet is one of their children. There's no reason you couldn't tell a story to the fur parents of things to do to make their babies happy. Using holidays, for example, trick-or-treat for your pooch with costumes and snacks, or for Valentine's Day show your puppy love and have Valentine-themed treats. You’re marketing to the owners, not to the pets. I know I spend way too much on my dog, Bella."

“I agree with Presley, Tillie. I bought dog treats in the shape of Christmas trees last year and cost didn’t really enter my mind.”

Tillie had a grin on her face. "What great ideas, and you’re right about not trying to market to the dog. The dog isn’t going to come in and hand over their Visa card. I'm trying to market to the parents. I feel a little bit better now. Thank you."

"Don't ever think you're a failure. While you can think you're in over your head—personally I think that's a perpetual feeling of any business owner because there isn't that direct deposit going into your checking account at the end of each pay period—you can't let it get the best of you," Presley said, and I nodded my agreement.

"I can't believe I'm hungry again after eating all those snacks, but is it time for lunch yet?" Presley asked, patting her stomach.

"I think we’re a little early, but we can head to the room and have a seat," I said.
